MU Online Classes Explained: Stats, Unlocks and Evolutions

A plain-English tour of the 16 MU Online classes with Webzen's starting stats, unlock levels and class evolutions, and what it means on private servers.

How MU Online classes work

MU Online has 16 playable classes, and which ones you can create depends on the game version. Some can be created straight away, others need a high-level character on the same account, and the newest were added in later Seasons.

This guide uses Webzen's own class pages and the Wikipedia article for the facts, and marks anything a private server is free to change. Once you know what you want, filter the MU Online server list by Season, because a server on an old version simply does not have the newer classes.

  • Stats: Strength, Agility, Vitality and Energy, plus Command for the Dark Lord.
  • Class change: you evolve by completing quests while meeting the class and level requirements.
  • Rewards: each change grants new spells, skills, weapons and wings.

Starting stats from Webzen's guides

Webzen's guide library lists base stats for each class. Strength raises melee damage, Agility improves accuracy, speed and defence, Vitality adds health, and Energy adds mana and skill damage. These are the official starting values; a private server may change them.

The three starting classes

The Dark Knight is the melee fighter, the Dark Wizard is a spellcaster using fire, water and ice, and the Fairy Elf combines archery and magic to give offence and support. Webzen describes the Fairy Elf as a class that provides "both offensive and defensive support".

Webzen lists no unlock requirement on any of these three pages. Our 97d page describes early servers with a short class list, and on Season 6 or later content these three still exist alongside the unlockable ones. A common plan is to start with one and level it to the point where a hybrid class becomes available, if the server follows Webzen's rules.

Unlockable and later classes

The Magic Gladiator is a hybrid that draws on Dark Knight and Dark Wizard abilities, and the Dark Lord is a mounted class that summons allies and uses the Command stat. Webzen's Dark Lord page says it best:

“Riding into battle on his steed, he is a terrifying force that summons his Dark Raven and Dark Horse to do his bidding.”
— Webzen MU Online: Dark Lord guide

Later classes follow the same idea. The Rage Fighter specialises in charge attacks, the Grow Lancer fights with a lance and shield, and the Rune Mage amplifies spell power with Energy and starts in Noria. Webzen lists the Rune Mage's class changes at levels 150, 220 and 380 to 400.

Evolution chains

Every class has its own series of names as it evolves. Wikipedia lists up to five stages, and some classes have only four. These chains help you recognise a character you see in rankings on a server page.

Which Season added which class

Webzen's season update guides name several of the newer classes. We found these entries; the guide does not cover the older ones, so we do not date them here.

Newer classes in Webzen's Season guides
ClassWhere Webzen lists it
Gun CrusherSeason 16 Part 1-1, new character
Illusion KnightSeason 18-1
Grow LancerSeason 19-1, class renewal
AlchemistSeason 20-1
CrusaderSeason 21-1

That matters for servers. Asteria MU says it is on Season 21 Part 2-3 with the Crusader class, so a Season 21 realm such as those in the Season 21 list can offer it, while a Season 4 project cannot. The same logic applies to a 97d server, which does not include the later classes at all.

What private servers change

Stat points and class changes are the first things operators tune. Resets return a character to level 1 for bonus points, so the per-level number matters less than the reset rules. MU Pangaea states 300 stats per reset, MU Horizon lists a cap of 50 resets and full 32,767 stats, and NoLimit MU Online lists a maximum of 32,767 stats and level 400.

Two ways servers treat classes

Reset-based servers

  • Characters return to level 1 many times
  • Stat points per reset set by the operator
  • Examples: MU Pangaea, MU Horizon, EpicMU

No-reset servers

  • Levels stay and progress is slower
  • Class choice carries more weight
  • Example: Master MU markets a hard no-reset mode, though its FAQ also mentions a progressive reset system, so confirm the rules

Choosing a class for your first server

  1. 1

    Pick the version first

Decide between classic (Season 2, Season 6) and modern content, because that fixes your class list.

  2. 2

    Check the server's unlock rules

Magic Gladiator and Dark Lord need a high-level character in Webzen's rules, and a server may change that threshold.

  3. 3

    Match the rates

On a 9999x server and on slow servers you will reach an unlock level at very different speeds, so plan around the rate.

  4. 4

    Ask in the server Discord

Staff and players know the current balance, and server pages like Dragon MU's guide list include Characters PvP and PvM.

Frequently asked questions

How many classes are in MU Online?

Wikipedia says players can choose from 16 character classes: Dark Wizard, Dark Knight, Fairy Elf, Magic Gladiator, Dark Lord, Summoner, Rage Fighter, Grow Lancer, Rune Mage, Slayer, Gun Crusher, White Wizard, Mage, Illusion Knight, Alchemist and Crusader. A private server may offer fewer, depending on its version.

How do you unlock the Magic Gladiator and Dark Lord?

Webzen's class guides list level 220 for the Magic Gladiator and level 250 for the Dark Lord. Those are the official rules for the global game. Private servers often adjust them, so check the server's own guide or ask staff before planning a character.

Which MU Online class is best for beginners?

The sources we used do not rank classes, so we cannot name a best one. The Dark Knight, Dark Wizard and Fairy Elf are available at creation and have the simplest descriptions. Ask the community of your chosen server, since balance changes between versions and rates.

What do stat points do in MU Online?

Strength raises melee damage, Agility affects accuracy and speed, Vitality increases health and Energy increases mana and skill damage. Dark Lords also use Command for pets. Most classes earn 5 points per level, while Magic Gladiators and Dark Lords earn 7, according to Wikipedia.

Do private servers have all 16 classes?

Not always. A class exists only if the server's version includes it. Webzen lists Crusader under Season 21 and Gun Crusher under Season 16, so older-version servers lack them. Check the version on the server page before picking.
