What is a Multi Theft Auto private server?
Multi Theft Auto is a free multiplayer modification for the PC versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas, with GTA San Andreas being the main focus today. It is written in C++ with Lua scripting, so server owners can build complete gamemodes such as roleplay, DayZ-style survival, racing and freeroam. Private servers are the whole point of MTA: every public server is run by a community or an individual, listed on a master server and joined with the free client. The scene is large in Turkey, Brazil, Poland, Russia, Iran and Latin America. MTA is unrelated to the GTA V platforms (FiveM, RAGE:MP, alt:V) and was not part of the 2026 Take-Two shutdowns.

A short history of Multi Theft Auto
Multi Theft Auto was first released in 2003 by MTA Team (community project; GPL v3). These are the milestones that shaped what private servers look like today.
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2003-02 | First release of Multi Theft Auto, a proof of concept for GTA III online play |
| 2003 | Project shifted focus to Vice City and then to a new framework codenamed Blue |
| 2023-06 | Version 1.6.0 released, the stable release listed on Wikipedia |
| 2026-02 | alt:V announced its shutdown at Take-Two's request, leaving MTA as an unaffected independent platform |
| 2026-03 | TOP-GTA DayZ gamemode 1.8 major update shipped |
| 2026-08 | NFS:San Andreas published a server update adding a car, a beta Vice City map and challenge rework |
Multi Theft Auto versions explained
Almost every private server picks one version of the game and sticks to it, so the version decides which content, classes and mechanics you get. Use this table to match a version to the style you want, then filter the server list accordingly.
| Version | Period | What it is | Typical servers |
|---|---|---|---|
| MTA:SA 1.6 | 2023-present | Current stable client and server line; servers are Lua resource-based and the client auto-downloads resources on connect. | All current gamemodes; the master list also shows servers announcing 1.7 pre-release builds. |
| Gamemode-defined versions | varies | Quality differences are defined by the server's own gamemode version (for example DayZ 1.8 or a named RPG season) rather than by client versions. | Check the gamemode changelog on the server's site. |
Multi Theft Auto rates and terms you will see
| Term | What it means | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Slots | Maximum simultaneous players the server allows; often far above real population. | 32-4096 in the master list I saw |
| Premium/VIP | Paid perks funded by donations; legit servers should state what they give. | varies |
| Server tick/FPS | Not a rate; ignore. MTA has no EXP rates in the MMO sense. | n/a |
Multi Theft Auto server types
| Type | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Roleplay (RP/RPG) | Story, character and faction play, voice or text | Language barriers and strict rules; many require forum applications or whitelisting |
| Cops and robbers / RPG | Casual action with jobs, gangs and police | Smaller populations on older servers |
| DayZ-style survival | Zombies, loot and PvP in San Andreas | Server-specific launchers; run only installers from the project's own site |
| Race / Mix / Drift / Freeroam | Short sessions, leaderboards, stunts | Low populations at off-peak hours |
| Text roleplay | Slow, written roleplay | Fewer players |
Language communities and what they run
MTA has no single scene. Each community builds its own gamemode, forum and rules in its own language, and many players stay with one for years. The table groups the servers we verified by language and style, using what each site says about itself. Where a community runs its own forum, voice server or radio, as ProjectRPG and CodeMTA do, expect rules, guides and applications to live there rather than in the game.
| Language | Server | Style |
|---|---|---|
| Turkish | Janti Roleplay, Unicorn Roleplay | Roleplay with crime, police and business careers; Unicorn is described as voice roleplay |
| Polish | ProjectRPG, CodeMTA | RPG gamemodes with forums, shops and voice or radio |
| Russian | MTA Role Play | Roleplay with organisations and moderation boards |
| English | Savline Roleplay, SAES:RPG | Medium-hardcore roleplay and cops and robbers |
| English | Need For Speed: San Andreas, Mr. Green Gaming | Street racing, race and mix servers |
| English and Russian | TOP-GTA DayZ, NON-STOP | DayZ-style survival with zombies |
See the category pages for roleplay, racing and minigames and DayZ and survival.
Population versus slots
A big slot number does not mean a busy server. Need For Speed: San Andreas shows roughly 10 players out of 160 slots on its portal, and the master list can show servers with thousands of slots. The player counts we recorded on 15 October 2026 are one snapshot, not an average. Low numbers do not mean a server is dead: a quiet MTA server can still have an active forum, and a busy one can still have poor moderation, so look at both population and the quality of staff replies before you decide.
| Server | Players online | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Janti Roleplay | 57 | Turkish roleplay |
| Unicorn Roleplay | 35 | Turkish voice roleplay |
| ProjectRPG | 34 | Polish RPG |
| CodeMTA | 12 | Polish RPG |
| Need For Speed: San Andreas | 11 | Out of 160 slots |
| SAES:RPG | 7 | English cops and robbers |
| TOP-GTA DayZ | 5 | One International server |
| Mr. Green Gaming | 0 | Race and mix servers, low population |
Beyond roleplay: racing, mix and survival projects
MTA's non-roleplay scene is older and often more community-driven than commercial. The sites we verified describe their own scale, which helps set expectations.
| Project | Style | Self-described detail |
|---|---|---|
| Need For Speed: San Andreas | Street racing and car tuning | Forum reports more than 50,000 registered members |
| Mr. Green Gaming | Race and mix servers | Community founded in 2006; GreenCoins rewards and VIP perks via donation page |
| TOP-GTA DayZ | DayZ-style survival | Fleet grouped by region: five International servers and eleven Russian and Ukrainian servers |
| NON-STOP | Zombie survival with mutants | Bilingual English and Russian project with seasonal events |
Because these projects run on gamemodes rather than rates, the differences between them are about content: tuning options, map pools, survival mechanics and event calendars. Read their changelogs, not just their homepages.
Signs a server is still maintained
Because MTA servers are independent, activity is the best guide. TOP-GTA published a DayZ 1.8 update dated 6 March 2026, and the Need For Speed: San Andreas forum announced a new car, a beta Vice City map and reworked challenges in August after a long delay. SAES:RPG staff acknowledged lower player counts and client instability in a July post. Dated posts like these are more useful than a polished homepage.
| Signal | Example from our research |
|---|---|
| Dated update post | TOP-GTA DayZ 1.8, 6 March 2026 |
| Active forum or tracker | Need For Speed: San Andreas forum and bug tracker with daily staff posts |
| Honest status notes | SAES:RPG staff post about lower counts and client instability |
| Relaunch announcements | Savline Roleplay forum thread about relaunching |
Several projects ship their own installer or launcher. Run only those from the project's own domain and scan them first, as our safety guide recommends. The glossary explains terms such as gamemode.
If a server is in our directory, its availability is also re-checked on the status page. Even so, the project's own site and Discord remain the source of truth for rules, wipes of progress, donation policy and staff changes, so read them before you spend time or money on any MTA community. A few minutes of reading usually reveals whether a project is thriving or only holding on, and it costs nothing.

How Multi Theft Auto private servers work
A private server is software that re-implements the game's back end so the official or a patched client can connect to it. For Multi Theft Auto the common building blocks are MTA:SA server (mtasa-blue), Lua resources. Default game port is 22003 (UDP) with 22005 HTTP and 22126 ASE; servers are listed on the master server at master.multitheftauto.com. Some servers ship their own launcher or installer.
How to choose a Multi Theft Auto server
Work through this checklist before you commit time or money to any server:
- Language the server rules and chat use
- Recent forum or Discord activity
- Live player count on the master list
- Whether voice chat is required
- Whether a custom launcher or big resource download is needed (some are 500MB)
- Whitelist or application process
- What donation perks include
- Whether staff publish rules and appeal procedures
- Time zone of peak population
- Hardware needs (low-end PC friendly servers state 'PC fraco' or small sizes)
Safety, scams and legality
- Only download MTA from multitheftauto.com or the server's own site; avoid random mirrors.
- Some projects offer their own .exe installer; check the domain and scan before running.
- Never share your MTA serial or forum password; serial is tied to bans.
- Donation shops are real-money; read what perks are promised and expect no refunds.
- MTA is a fan modification of a Rockstar game; it is separate from FiveM and unaffected by the 2026 shutdowns of RAGE:MP and alt:V.
Getting started on a Multi Theft Auto server
- 1
Pick a server
Start from the Multi Theft Auto server list or the most voted servers, and read the description, rates and rules.
- 2
Check the server’s own website
Confirm it is online, shows recent news and states its version. Our status checks help, but the website is the source of truth.
- 3
Install the client
Install a clean GTA San Andreas (the 1.0 US/EU version is commonly requested), install MTA:SA, then use the in-game browser or an mtasa://IP:PORT link. Resources download on connect.
- 4
Check requirements
Default game port is 22003 (UDP) with 22005 HTTP and 22126 ASE; servers are listed on the master server at master.multitheftauto.com. Some servers ship their own launcher or installer.

Multi Theft Auto private server FAQ
Is MTA affected by the Take-Two shutdowns?
No. The 2026 shutdowns concerned the GTA V platforms RAGE:MP and alt:V at Take-Two's request. MTA runs on GTA San Andreas, is open source and has its own master server, which was still returning thousands of servers on 15 October 2026.
Do I need to buy GTA San Andreas?
Yes. MTA needs your own copy of GTA San Andreas, and many servers ask for a clean 1.0 install. The mod itself is free to download.
How do I find a server?
Use the in-game server browser, which reads the master list, or click an mtasa:// link from a server's website. Filter by language and players, and check the website or Discord before joining.
Why are many servers in other languages?
MTA's biggest communities are in Turkey, Brazil, Poland, Russia, Iran and Latin America, and most servers are run in the owner's language. English-speaking choices exist but are fewer.
Are donations safe?
Donation shops are normal for server funding, but they are voluntary purchases. Read what the perks are, avoid paying in unsanctioned channels and do not share account passwords.
What does the port 22003 mean?
It is MTA's default game port. Servers can use other ports, so always copy the full IP:port from the server's own site or the in-game list.
Why do some MTA servers show far fewer players than slots?
Slot counts are set by the owner and are often far above real population. Need For Speed: San Andreas, for example, showed about 10 players on 160 slots when we checked. Use recent Discord or forum activity as a better guide.
Are there English-language MTA roleplay servers?
Yes. Savline Roleplay is an English medium-hardcore roleplay community, and SAES:RPG is an English cops and robbers server. Other large communities run in Turkish, Polish and Russian, so read the language rules on each site.
Are MTA DayZ servers safe to join?
Some DayZ-style projects such as TOP-GTA offer their own installer and launcher. Download only from the project's official domain and scan the file before running it, since a fake installer is a common way to spread malware.
How can I tell if an MTA server is still active?
Look for dated forum or news posts, a recent update changelog and a live player count on the in-game browser. A server with a polished homepage but no recent posts may be inactive.
