A RuneScape private server, usually called an RSPS, is a fan-run game built on reverse-engineered RuneScape server code. Each one targets a specific client revision, recreates Gielinor's skills, quests and bosses, and then layers its own rules, rates and custom content on top.
Some servers aim to feel close to Old School RuneScape with faster experience. Others are built around player killing, instant gear or custom bosses and items. Because the scene is so varied, two RSPS can feel like completely different games.
RuneScape is a fantasy MMORPG developed and published by Jagex, first released on 4 January 2001. The company now runs two live versions: RuneScape 3 (2013) and Old School RuneScape, which launched in February 2013 from an August 2007 build. A RuneScape private server (RSPS) is a fan-run game using independent server software and a client of a chosen revision. They exist because players want faster progression, older eras the official game no longer offers, PvP-focused or custom content, and communities that the official game does not provide. They are unofficial and not affiliated with Jagex.

RuneScape was first released in 2001 by Jagex. These are the milestones that shaped what private servers look like today.
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2001-01 | RuneScape released by Jagex on 4 January 2001. |
| 2004 | RuneScape 2 released; the original game became known as RuneScape Classic. |
| 2012 | Evolution of Combat introduced ability-based combat. |
| 2013-02 | Old School RuneScape released, based on an August 2007 build. |
| 2013-07 | RuneScape 3 released as the third major iteration. |
| 2018-10 | Old School RuneScape released for iOS and Android. |
| 2024 | Jagex announced Project Zanaris, official rentable community servers, at Summer Summit 2024. |
| 2025-06 | Project Zanaris was paused indefinitely with a post on 3 June 2025. |
Almost every private server picks one version of the game and sticks to it, so the version decides which content, classes and mechanics you get. Use this table to match a version to the style you want, then filter the server list accordingly.
| Version | Period | What it is | Typical servers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revision 317 | mid-2000s | A small, widely used 2006-era client revision with a vast base of public server source code. | Spawn and PK servers, custom-item economies, some classic-style servers with later bosses (for example Ashmarch) |
| OSRS-based (modern 200+ revisions) | 2013 onward | Servers that mirror Old School RuneScape content using newer clients, often with RuneLite-style plugins and mobile. | Economy, raids/bossing, ironman, seasonal Leagues-style worlds |
| Revision 614 / Pre-EoC | around 2010 | RuneScape 2 era before Evolution of Combat, using legacy combat. | PvP and wilderness servers (for example Divinity614) and Pre-EoC servers with RS3 content (Runite PS) |
| 2011-2012 era (RS3 engine) | 2011-2012 | Remakes of the game before or around Evolution of Combat, such as Darkan (2012). | Authentic remakes, open-source projects, accelerated worlds |
| Term | What it means | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| EXP rate | Multiplier on skill experience compared with the base game. | Darkan 25x on its accelerated world and Ashmarch 5x, 3x or 1x by mode; other servers vary |
| Drop rate | Modifier to boss and monster drop chances; some servers give a bonus to harder game modes. | Ashmarch gives +5 to +8 percent for lower-EXP modes |
| Game mode | Account types such as Regular, Ironman or Hardcore Ironman that change rates and restrictions. | Server-specific |
| Type | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| OSRS-based economy / PvM | Players who want OSRS-style bosses and raids with faster progression. | Donation perks that undermine the economy; check drop rates and what the store sells. |
| PvP / PK / spawn | Fast fights and wilderness play with instant gear. | Gambling areas and risk-based economies; set strict stake limits. |
| Authentic remake | Nostalgia for a specific era (2006, 2011, 2012). | Smaller communities and slower updates. |
| Seasonal / Leagues-style | Players who like resets and leaderboards next to a permanent world. | Progress may reset; read season rules. |
The size of a community matters more than its marketing. On October 15, 2026 we recorded Discord and site signals for the servers on our RuneScape list. They are snapshots, not averages, and some sites expose no counts at all.
| Server | Style | Discord members | Online at check |
|---|---|---|---|
| August | Custom PvM and raids | About 10,400 | About 2,250 |
| Impact | OSRS-based raids and bossing | About 10,200 | About 930 |
| Darkan | 2012 remake | About 1,440 | About 200 |
| Luna | OSRS-based economy and Leagues | About 1,700 | About 177 |
| Amascut | OSRS-based seasonal | About 1,210 | About 164 |
| Slayora | Custom PvM | About 610 | About 110 |
| Varkath | OSRS-based economy | About 4,000 | About 101 |
| Ashmarch | Revision 317 | About 180 | About 32 |
| Runite PS | Pre-EoC with RS3 cache | About 220 | About 21 |
| Zythera | OSRS-based raids and PvP | About 37 | About 7 |
Numbers also shift with the time of day and with seasons. Luna and Amascut run seasonal content, which can pull players in at the start of a season and thin out later, so a count taken mid-season understates the launch rush. Check the Discord on the evening you plan to play rather than relying on one reading.
Most listed servers label themselves OSRS-based, but they use the label differently. The servers below show the range from near-copy to a game of its own.
| Server | What the site states |
|---|---|
| Impact | Chambers of Xeric, Theatre of Blood and Tombs of Amascut, plus 45+ bosses; start fresh or maxed |
| Zythera | 23 skills, four raids and 50+ bosses, with recent OSRS encounters such as Yama and the Fortis Colosseum |
| Luna | Permanent economy world beside seasonal League worlds; ironman and bronzeman modes |
| Amascut | Dated patch notes, battle pass, skill tree and echo bosses |
| August | Custom Olympian raids, custom talent tree and US, EU and OCE worlds |
| Varkath | Long-running economy with ironman and hardcore ironman play |
If you want official-style content with faster progress, Impact and Zythera fit. If you want something new, August describes itself as a game of its own. See PvM and raids for the boss-focused group.
A dated post is the quickest evidence that someone is still working. Amascut posted a Fall Season update on October 1, with patch notes on September 17 and 8. Varkath showed a game update on September 22, Luna had dated items up to September 19, and Slayora publishes a roadmap running to December. Darkan's news feed is slow, with its newest post seen on September 9, 2024, yet its Discord was active.
| Server | Stated modes or rates |
|---|---|
| Ashmarch | XP x5, x3 for Lucky, x1 for Unreal and Ultra Ironman; +5 to +8 percent drop bonus for lower-XP modes |
| Darkan | World 1 follows 2012; World 2 runs 25x XP; no in-game purchases |
| Impact | Start fresh or maxed account mode |
| Luna | Ironman and bronzeman modes; seasonal Leagues-style world |
Read the mode page before creating a character, because progress usually does not move between modes. The rates guide and wipes explainer help with the vocabulary.
Download options vary widely, and they matter if you play on more than one machine. The details below are what each site listed.
| Server | What the site lists |
|---|---|
| Zythera | Windows, Mac and Linux clients |
| EmberHold | Windows installer, macOS DMG, Linux AppImage, jar, Android APK, iOS in browser |
| August | Windows installer and universal jar |
| Ashmarch | Browser client and Java launcher |
| Luna | PC, iPhone, iPad and Android |
Installers are signed or unsigned depending on the project, and the facts we collected note that Windows may warn about unsigned launchers. Run them only if the server's own site supplied them, and keep your operating system updated. Jar launchers commonly need Java installed. For phones, see the mobile clients listed above, and for general steps read how to join a private server. Always download the client from the server's own website.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| RSPS | RuneScape private server, a fan-run game using custom server software. |
| Revision | The client/cache version number, such as 317 or 614. |
| OSRS-based | A server that follows Old School RuneScape content. |
| Pre-EoC | Before Evolution of Combat, using the older combat system. |
| PKing | Player killing in the wilderness. |
| Spawn server | A server where players get items instantly instead of earning them. |
| Ironman | A mode with limited trading and self-sufficiency. |
| HCIM | Hardcore Ironman, where death removes ironman status. |
| Donator | A player who buys perks or currency from the store. |
| Hiscores | Website leaderboards of skills, kills or boss counts. |
| League | A seasonal game mode with accelerated progression and relics. |
| Cache | The game's data archive that defines models and maps. |
A private server is software that re-implements the game's back end so the official or a patched client can connect to it. For RuneScape the common building blocks are Void (open-source, 2011 RuneScape, Kotlin), Darkan (open-source 2012 remake). Java 11 or newer is commonly required for jar launchers. Use a download only from the server's own site.
Official RuneScape and Old School RuneScape are balanced around long-term grinding and a membership subscription. Private servers usually raise skilling and combat experience rates, so reaching 99 in a skill can take hours rather than weeks. Many add teleport menus, home banks, starter kits and daily tasks to cut downtime.
Most RSPS are free to play and supported by donations. In return, donors often receive ranks with perks such as extra drop rate, donator zones or cosmetic items. How far those perks go is one of the most important things to understand before you start.
Revisions describe which version of the client a server uses. Older revisions such as 317 have a long history in the scene and are often heavily customised. Revisions around the 600s and 700s are based on RuneScape 2 and early RuneScape 3 era content, with features such as the Grand Exchange and later combat changes. OSRS-based servers use modern Old School clients and recreate content such as raids and newer bosses with familiar interfaces.
Economy servers emphasise skilling, trading and drops, with items that hold value. Spawn servers let you spawn gear and supplies instantly so you can focus on PvP. PK servers are built around the Wilderness, bounty systems and quick kits. Many servers also offer ironman, hardcore ironman or ultimate ironman modes, and some add custom game modes with modified experience rates.
Decide first whether you want economy, PK or spawn play, then look at the experience rates for combat and skilling. Check whether the server has existed for a while and whether it has had frequent resets, since many RSPS relaunch under new names. A server with a stable history and a published update log is a safer time investment.
Read the donation store closely. Cosmetics, convenience ranks and minor boosts are common; selling best-in-slot gear or large drop rate multipliers can make the economy unbalanced. Check how active the staff are, whether bots and macros are dealt with, and whether the team publishes clear rules about real-world trading.
Most servers greet new players with a starter kit, a home area with banks and shops and a teleport interface to skilling and combat locations. Before spending your starting coins, read the server's guides on the fastest early money makers, since custom drop tables and shops often differ from the original game.
Decide early whether you want to play as a normal account or an ironman variant, because switching later is usually limited. Join the server's Discord for update announcements, event schedules and drop parties, and check whether in-game commands such as ::vote, ::store or ::help work, since they often unlock rewards and support.
RuneScape private servers are unofficial and not affiliated with or endorsed by Jagex. Most RSPS use a downloadable client or launcher, so download it only from the server's official website and scan it before running. Be very cautious with jar or exe files shared in Discord DMs.
Never reuse your official RuneScape or Jagex account password on a private server. Use a unique password, enable any two-factor or bank pin options the server offers, and never share your login with anyone promising free items or ranks.
Still deciding? Compare RuneScape servers by votes, rates and recent activity, read the glossary for any unfamiliar terms, and check a server's status before you download anything. If you run a server yourself, listing it is free.

A revision is the client version the server is built for, such as 317 or a modern OSRS revision. It determines the interfaces, items, maps and mechanics available. Older revisions are easy to customise, while newer OSRS-based revisions offer modern content such as raids and recent bosses. The server's client is tied to its revision, so always use the client it provides.
On economy servers you gather resources, kill monsters and trade to earn items, so wealth has meaning and progression takes time. On spawn servers you can create gear and supplies with commands, which removes grinding and puts the focus on PvP skill. Some servers combine both with separate worlds or game modes.
Almost all RSPS are free to download and play. They cover hosting through optional donations, often rewarded with ranks, cosmetic items or perks. Check what donating gives, because some servers keep perks modest while others sell powerful items. A free player should still be able to reach the core content.
No. Private servers have their own account systems and no connection to Jagex. Create a new account with a unique password, and never enter your official login on any private server, launcher or website. Anyone asking for your official credentials should be treated as a phishing attempt.
Ironman restricts trading, other players' drops and many shared features, so you must gather everything yourself. Hardcore ironman adds a death penalty, and ultimate ironman removes banking. On private servers ironman modes often come with adjusted experience rates or extra drop rate to balance the restrictions.
Servers sometimes reset to fix a broken economy, move to a new revision or relaunch after a major rework. Some also rebrand after leadership changes. Frequent resets can wipe progress you have worked for, so look for servers with a stable history and clear communication about future plans.
RSPS stands for RuneScape private server. It is a fan-run game using independent server software and a client of a specific revision, with its own rules, rates and custom content. It is unofficial and not run by Jagex, and accounts are separate from official RuneScape accounts.
No. OSRS is the official Jagex game. An OSRS-based RSPS copies much of its content but usually raises experience rates, adds custom bosses, teleports and donor perks, and may use a different economy. Always check what the server changes.
317 is a client revision from around 2006 that many public server bases use. Servers on 317 range from spawn PK servers to classic-style games like Ashmarch, which adds later bosses to a 2006 cache.
Only download from the server's own website, run an up-to-date antivirus scan, and never reuse passwords. Jagex warns about malware risk, so avoid client links shared by strangers.
Several OSRS-based servers advertise them. Impact lists Chambers of Xeric, Theatre of Blood and Tombs of Amascut, Zythera lists four raids, and Luna and August describe raids of their own. Check each site for the current list.
Look for dated posts. Amascut showed an update on October 1, Varkath on September 22, and Slayora publishes a roadmap. Some servers have slow sites but active Discords, so check both.
It is a world that runs time-limited seasons beside a permanent economy world. Luna describes seasonal League worlds with relics, and Amascut posts seasonal events and a battle pass. Check whether progress resets.
August lists US, EU and OCE worlds, which helps with latency. Most other servers we checked did not state regions on their front page, so ask in the Discord.
