What is a Minecraft private server?

Minecraft is a sandbox game created by Markus Persson and developed by Mojang Studios, now owned by Microsoft. It ships in two main editions: Java Edition for PC and Bedrock Edition for consoles, mobile and Windows. Multiplayer servers are a core part of the game: Mojang permits running the Java server software, and a very large ecosystem of community networks, survival worlds, anarchy servers and modded communities has grown around it. Players seek out community servers for minigames, persistent economies, towns and nations, rules-free anarchy or Pokemon-style modpacks that the base game does not provide.

How Minecraft private servers work

A private server is software that re-implements the game's back end so the official or a patched client can connect to it. For Minecraft the common building blocks are Spigot, Paper, Folia, Fabric, NeoForge, Forge. Status can be checked with api.mcsrvstat.us/3/<host> which returns version, MOTD and player counts.

How to choose a Minecraft server

Work through this checklist before you commit time or money to any server:

  1. Check the status API for current version and player count
  2. Confirm your edition (Java or Bedrock) is supported
  3. Look for dated news or changelog posts within the last few months
  4. Read the rules and punishment pages
  5. Check whether a modpack is required and where it is hosted
  6. Check seasonal reset schedules before investing time
  7. Review store ranks for pay-to-win items
  8. Validate the Discord invite and read its rules channel
  9. Check region and latency
  10. See whether staff publish an anticheat or account-security page

Safety, scams and legality

  • Only download modpacks from the server's official site or Modrinth/CurseForge page, never from a Discord DM.
  • Cracked (non-premium) access removes Mojang authentication; use unique passwords.
  • Never share your Microsoft account credentials with staff.
  • Read the store page: Mojang usage guidelines restrict pay-to-win monetisation, so check what ranks actually grant.
  • Anarchy servers have no rule protection; do not bring valuables you cannot lose.
  • Be careful with third-party mods; the EULA permits mods but not distributing hacked clients.

Getting started on a Minecraft server

  1. 1

    Pick a server

Start from the Minecraft server list or the top servers, and read the description, rates and rules.

  2. 2

    Check the server’s own website

Confirm it is online, shows recent news and states its version. Our status checks help, but the website is the source of truth.

  3. 3

    Install the client

Java Edition: add the address under Multiplayer. Bedrock: add under Servers tab with port 19132 or use the featured server list. Modded servers require the project's modpack or listed Cobblemon/Pixelmon version.

  4. 4

    Check requirements

Status can be checked with api.mcsrvstat.us/3/<host> which returns version, MOTD and player counts.

  5. 5

    Join the community

Most servers run a Discord. Ask about wipes, staff and the donation policy before you spend anything.

Keep exploring

Still deciding? Compare Minecraft servers by votes, rates and recent activity, read the glossary for any unfamiliar terms, and check a server's status before you download anything. If you run a server yourself, listing it is free.

Minecraft private server FAQ

Do I need mods to join most servers?

No. Most networks accept a vanilla Java or Bedrock client. Modded communities such as Cobblemon or Pixelmon servers require a specific mod or modpack, which they document on their own install or wiki pages.

Can Bedrock players join Java servers?

Only on servers that run crossplay support. Netherite and CubeCraft state that they accept both editions. Check each site for the Bedrock address and port, which is usually 19132.

What is an anarchy server?

A server with almost no rules, a world that never resets and free-for-all PvP. 2b2t describes itself this way. Expect griefing and no claim protection.

How do I check if a server is online?

Use a status API such as api.mcsrvstat.us/3/<host>, which returns online state, version and player count.

Are server ranks pay-to-win?

It varies. Mojang's usage guidelines restrict some monetisation, but stores still sell ranks and cosmetics. Read the store and rules pages before paying.

What is a server reset?

A scheduled wipe of a mode's map or economy. PikaNetwork announced a survival reset and OPBlocks runs Prison seasons, so ask about reset schedules before investing time.

Which server type suits solo players?

Skyblock and survival servers suit solo progression, while minigame networks suit short sessions with friends. Smaller communities may also be easier to join.
