What is a Lineage 1 private server?
Lineage is a fantasy MMORPG developed and published by NCSoft, released in South Korea in 1998 and set in the Kingdom of Aden. Its Blood Pledge clans, castle sieges and harsh death penalties shaped many later MMORPGs. NCSoft shut the North American service in June 2011, and the original remains tied to NCSoft's own operation elsewhere. Private servers exist for players who want the older 3.x client generation, different rates or an English community, and most run on the open-source l1j-en emulator or custom Java derivatives. The scene is small and mostly English-speaking communities built around a few long-running projects.

Lineage 1 versions explained

| Version | Period | What it is | Typical servers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.63 / 3.63C client | mid-generation 3.x client | Client generation supported by Lineage 1 Reborn and by l1j-en's 363 branch; offers higher-resolution clients. | Standard x5 and classic x1 worlds |
| 2009 US client | final NA client | Main l1j-en target. | Classic English servers |
| Season 4 / Risen-style rulesets | later content | Rulesets with updated classes and spells; Lin Aegis lists a Risen 2.0 ruleset. | Patch-driven fresh start servers |
| Custom (L1.5) | ongoing | Custom content, browser client and extra classes. | Event-driven custom |
Lineage 1 rates and terms you will see

How Lineage 1 private servers work
A private server is software that re-implements the game's back end so the official or a patched client can connect to it. For Lineage 1 the common building blocks are l1j-en (GPL-2.0, 2009 US client and 363 branch). Server communities state restrictions in NCSoft-serviced countries; Lineage 1 Reborn says people in such countries are not allowed to play.
How to choose a Lineage 1 server
Work through this checklist before you commit time or money to any server:
- Client version (3.63, 3.63C, other)?
- EXP/adena/drop rates stated?
- Classic x1 or Standard x5?
- Pay-to-win policy?
- Recent patch notes?
- Population and Discord activity?
- Castle siege schedule?
- Region restrictions?
- Which classes are available?
- Is a browser client offered?
Safety, scams and legality
- Only download from the server's own site; scan clients.
- Read the legal disclaimer: some servers prohibit play from NCSoft-serviced countries.
- Use a unique password; do not share accounts.
- l1j-en takes no position on legality; check local rules.
- Verify Discord invites.
Getting started on a Lineage 1 server
- 1
Pick a server
Start from the Lineage 1 server list or the most voted servers, and read the description, rates and rules.
- 2
Check the server’s own website
Confirm it is online, shows recent news and states its version. Our status checks help, but the website is the source of truth.
- 3
Install the client
Download the server's client or patch from its own site; some servers add launchers or a browser client (L1.5 offers a browser client).
- 4
Check requirements
Server communities state restrictions in NCSoft-serviced countries; Lineage 1 Reborn says people in such countries are not allowed to play.

Keep exploring
Still deciding? Compare Lineage 1 servers by votes, rates and recent activity, read the glossary for any unfamiliar terms, and check a server's status before you download anything. If you run a server yourself, listing it is free.

Lineage 1 private server FAQ
Is Lineage 1 still playable?
NCSoft runs the game in other regions, but North American service ended in June 2011. Private servers fill the gap for English-speaking communities.
What is l1j-en?
An open-source (GPL-2.0) English Lineage 1 server emulator targeting the 2009 US client, with a 363 branch for the 3.63 feature set.
What is 3.63C?
A client generation used by Lineage 1 Reborn. Reborn offers a Standard world (EXP x5, adena x4, drop x2) and a Classic Style x1 world.
Are there region restrictions?
Some servers, such as Lineage 1 Reborn, say players in countries serviced by NCSoft are not allowed to play.
Which server has the most players?
On the day checked, Lineage Justice's homepage showed about 270 online and Lineage 1 Reborn's Discord about 170 online; Lin Aegis showed 12-15.
Is the scene big?
No. Only four servers could be verified, so expect small, close-knit communities.
