What Lineage Classic is
Lineage Classic is a PC game from NCSoft that recreates the early-2000s version of the original Lineage. It is not Lineage 2, and it is not the mobile Lineage M. It opened in South Korea and Taiwan in February 2026 as an official, subscription-based service.
Players outside those regions are often looking for the same experience through unofficial servers. This page compares the official release with the Lineage 1 private servers we list, so you can see what each route does and does not offer. Everything about the official game comes from news reports published around its launch, so check NCSoft for anything that has changed since.

The Lineage family in dates
Several products share the name, which is why searches get confusing. This table separates them using dates from Wikipedia and news reports.
| Product | Date | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Lineage (Windows) | 3 Sep 1998 | The original game; Mac OS X version followed on 11 Apr 2002 |
| Lineage II | 2003 | Released as a prequel set 150 years before Lineage |
| North American Lineage service | Closed 29 Jun 2011 | NCSoft's US subsidiary shut it down over weak subscription revenue |
| Lineage M (mobile) | 21 Jun 2017 | Mobile port released in South Korea |
| Lineage Classic | Feb 2026 | Official PC recreation of early Lineage, South Korea and Taiwan |
Official Lineage Classic vs private servers
The biggest difference is access and ownership. The official game is run by NCSoft on its PURPLE platform; the private servers are fan projects, mostly built on the open-source l1j-en emulator or similar code.
Two ways to play early Lineage
Lineage Classic (official)
- Operated by NCSoft on the PURPLE platform
- Monthly subscription after a free pre-service period
- 2D isometric overhead view, slow grind-heavy progression
- Four starting classes listed: Prince/Lord, Knight, Elf, Wizard
- No confirmed global release in the reports we found
Lineage 1 private servers
- Run by independent teams; some state restrictions on players in NCSoft-serviced countries
- Shops and donation pages vary by server, so read the rules
- Lineage Justice, for example, lists seven classes: Royal, Knight, Elf, Wizard, Dark Elf, Dragon Knight and Illusionist
- Rates range from classic x1 to Standard x5
- English-language communities exist today
What early Lineage actually plays like
Whichever route you take, the core game is the same one NCSoft launched in 1998. Wikipedia lists seven classes: Elf, Dark Elf, Knight, Prince, Magician, Dragon Knight and Illusionist. The Prince is the only class that can lead a blood pledge, which is Lineage's word for a clan.
The game is built around castle sieges, and castle owners can set tax rates in neighbouring cities. Alignment (neutral, chaotic or lawful) changes how monsters and town guards react to you, and players can fight each other anywhere outside safe zones such as cities.
| System | How it works |
|---|---|
| Blood pledge | The clan system; only a Prince can lead one |
| Castle siege | Pledges fight to own a castle and its tax income |
| Alignment | Neutral, chaotic or lawful; affects monster and guard reactions |
| Open PvP | Allowed anywhere outside safe zones such as cities |
| Death penalty | Dying can cost experience or items, according to the Classic coverage |
Reading a private server's rate sheet
Lineage 1 Reborn publishes an unusually clear rates page for its Standard world, which makes it a good example of what to look for on any server.
| Setting | Listed value |
|---|---|
| Experience | x5 |
| Adena | x4 |
| Drop rate | x2 |
| Party experience | x3 |
| Karma | x16 |
| Experience soft cap | 77 |
| Maximum elixirs | 5 |
| Maximum stat total | 35 |
The same server also offers a Classic Style world at x1, chosen when you create a game account. If you want help interpreting multipliers, our rates guide covers the general idea.
Patch notes tell you how a server is run. Lineage Justice published notes dated 13 October 2026 that change stat elixir rules, and Lin Aegis listed Update 031, dated 10 October 2026, raising a storage cap from 100 to 150 and adjusting drop rates. Frequent dated notes are a good sign, while a site with no dates at all deserves caution.
Private servers you can compare today
Our research found four active Lineage 1 projects. Each was checked against its own site, and the details below come from those pages.
| Server | Client or ruleset | Style | What stood out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lineage 1 Reborn | 3.63C client | Standard x5 and Classic Style x1 worlds | EXP x5, adena x4, drop x2, soft cap 77; no pay-to-win stated |
| Lineage Justice | 3.63 client on l1j-en | Classic-leaning, castle sieges | About 270 players online; patch notes dated 13 October 2026 |
| Lin Aegis | Season 4 content, Risen 2.0 ruleset | Fresh-start, patch-driven | Update 031 dated 10 October 2026; small population |
| L1.5 | Custom, browser and desktop client | Event-driven custom content | Halloween event from 16 October to 13 November |
Client versions are worth a note. Lineage Justice runs the 3.63 client through l1j-en, and its newer site announces a client numbered 8.8c and a launcher that were still in testing when we checked. l1j-en itself targets the final 2009 US client, with a separate 363 branch for the 3.63 feature set, according to its repository. If a server asks you to download a specific client, take it only from the server's own site.

How to decide which route fits you
- 1
Check where you live
If you are in South Korea or Taiwan, the official Lineage Classic service is open. Outside those regions, the reports we found said no global release was confirmed.
- 2
Decide how authentic you want it
Classic x1 worlds feel closest to the slow original. Standard x5 trims the grind. See client 3.63 servers for the common choice.
- 3
Want new content?
Custom servers add events and classes. Browse the custom content servers if you prefer that.
- 4
Verify the server is alive
Look for dated patch notes and check the status page. The join guide walks through account and client steps.
