FiveM in plain terms
FiveM is a free-to-use multiplayer framework for Grand Theft Auto V. Instead of one official online world, it lets anyone run a separate server with its own scripts, maps, vehicles and rules, and lets players pick between them from a server browser. If you want to see what exists right now, the FiveM server list is the place to start.
The short version: you keep your own copy of GTA V, add the FiveM client, and join a community-run city. Terms like whitelist, framework or resource are covered in the glossary if any of this is new.
“FiveM and FiveM for GTAV Enhanced are multiplayer-enabled modification frameworks for Grand Theft Auto V, powered by Cfx.”
FiveM compared with GTA Online
FiveM
- Run by communities and individuals, each with its own rules
- Custom scripts, jobs, economies and maps per server
- Roleplay, racing, drifting, PvP and freeroam all exist
- Server staff enforce rules and handle bans
GTA Online
- Run by Rockstar as a single official service
- Missions, heists and progression set by the developer
- No tooling for community-defined roleplay cities
- One shared rulebook for everyone
How the pieces fit together
Four layers make up the experience, and knowing which is which makes server descriptions much easier to read. The official documentation describes the project as a modification framework, and scripts on a server can be written in Lua, C# or JavaScript.
| Part | What it is | Who deals with it |
|---|---|---|
| FiveM client | The program you install and launch instead of the normal GTA V menu | Players |
| FXServer | The server software that hosts one world and loads its resources | Server owners |
| Resources | Scripts, maps, vehicles and UI that the server streams to you when you connect | Server owners and script authors |
| Framework | A base layer for jobs, money and inventories, for example ESX, QBCore or Qbox | Server owners |
| txAdmin | A web panel for running and monitoring an FXServer | Server owners |
Because resources download when you connect, you never install a server's content by hand. Joining a different city a minute later means a different set of rules, map changes and scripts, with no separate game install.
What you need to play
FiveM does not include the game. Its documentation says it requires a fully updated installation of GTA V and will not work with illegitimate copies. There are now two client flavours, a Legacy one and one for the GTA V Enhanced edition, and each needs the matching edition of the game.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Fully updated Windows 8.1, 10 or 11 | Windows 10 is recommended |
| CPU | Intel Core 2 Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850 | Intel Core i5 3470 or AMD FX-8350 |
| GPU | NVIDIA 9800 GT 1GB or AMD HD 4870 1GB | NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB or AMD HD7870 2GB |
| RAM | 8GB (4GB may work) | 16GB |
| Disk | 105GB plus about 4GB for the cache | 105GB plus about 8GB |
What kinds of servers exist
Roleplay is the best known style, but it is only one of several. The same client can drop you into a strict whitelisted city or a drop-in freeroam lobby, so it pays to know the categories before you pick.
| Style | What to expect | Typical catch |
|---|---|---|
| Serious whitelisted roleplay | Character stories, enforced rules, application to join | Waiting for approval and queue times |
| Public roleplay | Join straight away, lighter rules | Uneven rule enforcement |
| Gang and crime roleplay | Territory, heists and rival groups | Strict gang-creation requirements |
| Racing and drift | Car culture and leaderboards, little or no roleplay | Smaller, specialist player pools |
| Freeroam and PvP | Drop-in action without a character | Check moderation and anti-cheat |
Our category pages split these out: serious roleplay servers, gang servers and no-whitelist servers. Language matters too, since large communities run in German, Spanish, French and Turkish as well as English.

announced by Rockstar
Rockstar suspended the Social Club accounts of several FiveM team members in 2015, calling the client an unauthorized modification, according to Wikipedia. In August 2023 it announced the Cfx.re team had become part of the company. Reporting at the time said Rockstar had recently expanded its mods policy to officially include work from the roleplay creative community.
None of this changes who runs an individual server. Each one is still an independent community, so the safety and rule advice in our safety guide applies exactly as it would for any other game.
Is it official, and is it safe?
FiveM is a modification framework, and individual servers are community projects that Rockstar does not operate. This is not legal advice. If the terms matter to you, read Rockstar's current policy on mods and the terms of any server you join.
For picking a community, the guide to choosing a private server and the notes on private versus official servers cover the same checks in a game-neutral way. Newcomers should also read how to join a private server before applying anywhere, and can check whether a listed community is still online on the status page before spending time on an application. Browsing the most voted servers is a quick way to see where other players are spending their time.
What a first session looks like
Joining is less involved than the pieces above suggest. The official console documentation shows the same handful of ways in, and the F8 key opens the in-game console.
- 1
Confirm you own GTA V
FiveM needs a fully updated, legitimate installation, so make sure the edition matches the client you plan to use.
- 2
Install the client from fivem.net
Use the official site only. If the installer cannot find the game, FiveM prompts you for the GTA V folder.
- 3
Pick a server
Use the in-game server browser, a cfx.re/join link from the server's website, or press F8 and type connect followed by an address such as 127.0.0.1:30120.
- 4
Read the rules and join the Discord
Whitelisted cities also need an application before the game lets you in. Rules on roleplay conduct vary by server.
- 5
Create a character
Choose a believable name and start with an entry-level job while you learn the keybinds.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Slots | The maximum number of players a server allows at once; the official docs let owners set between 1 and 2048 |
| Whitelist | An approval step before you can join, usually an application on a website or Discord |
| Queue priority | A supporter perk that moves you up the join queue at busy hours |
| Framework | The base layer for jobs, inventories and money, such as ESX, QBCore or Qbox |
| OneSync | A server mode for state awareness; the docs say values above 64 slots require it to be on |
