What is a FiveM server?

FiveM is a modification framework for Grand Theft Auto V that lets communities run their own multiplayer servers with custom scripts, maps, vehicles and rules. Each server is a separate world, and the server browser inside the FiveM client lets you find and join them.

Roleplay is the most popular style. Players create characters with names and backstories, take jobs as police officers, medics, mechanics or business owners, and build stories with others in Los Santos. Other servers focus on racing, drifting, PvP, gangs or freeroam.

FiveM is a multiplayer modification framework for Grand Theft Auto V that lets communities host their own servers with custom scripts, maps, vehicles and rules. Because every server is independent, scenes range from whitelisted serious roleplay to freeroam, racing, drifting and PvP. Players connect with a free client and an owned PC copy of GTA V, then pick a server from the in-game browser or a join link. Private servers dominate because GTA Online has no roleplay tooling, and server owners can build their own economies, jobs, laws and communities.

Languages and regions in the FiveM scene

Where the English-language scene is concentrated in North America and the UK, other languages run large, self-contained cities. Language is often the deciding factor, because roleplay depends on conversation and most communities expect you to speak the server's language in character.

Spirit RP's Discord was the largest we recorded among the non-English entries when we checked on 15 October 2026, with more than 19,000 members, and Pecado City's reached about 10,900. Counts change daily, so use them only as a rough guide to community size.

Slots, queues and how busy a city really is

Slot counts are set by the server owner. The official server-command docs allow sv_maxclients between 1 and 2048, with values from 32 requiring the OneSync setting and values above 64 requiring it to be on. That is why roleplay cities can list hundreds of slots while a racing project lists far fewer.

Connect Roleplay178 of 200 slots occupied on its live panel when checked

Persistent worlds, seasons and version numbers

Some cities never reset, while others run in seasons or named versions. LuckyV's page description states six years online without wipes, seasons or downtime. Lucid City RP is on its 3.0 season, Vatan Roleplay is on Season 1 and Pecado City says it has run since 2020 and is now on version 9. Vio-V states that GTA V Enhanced is not supported, while Spirit RP offers both classic and Enhanced routes.

Lucid City RPLucid City 3.0 season
Pecado CityVersion 9, running since 2020
Vatan RoleplaySeason 1
Spirit RPClassic and Enhanced clients both offered

A season restart can mean new characters, so ask what carries over. For terminology see the glossary, and for category views see serious roleplay, gang and no-whitelist servers.

Entry routes compared

Even among whitelisted cities, the path in differs. The sites describe the steps themselves, so use them to estimate how long you will wait before you can play.

How selected servers describe joining
ServerRouteDetail from the site
Royalty RoleplayWebsite application after linking DiscordMost applications take around ten minutes
FiveLife RPWhitelist, five-step processSpanish-language serious roleplay
Spirit RPWhitelist or free accessOpened after a three-month closed beta with selected testers
ONEVNo whitelistAccess unlocks with one click in Discord
Pecado CityJoin code from its siteSpanish-language gang and economy city

Whichever route you choose, treat the application as part of the game: answer in your own words and keep your Discord messages open for the decision.

Capital Roleplay and Royalty Roleplay both run stores for supporter perks, and Royalty states its paid tiers grant queue priority and Discord roles. That is the common model. Before paying anything, compare what the store sells with the rules page and confirm the perk does not change fairness. Our safety guide lists the checks.

Beyond roleplay: racing and open-source projects

Not every listed server is a roleplay city. StreetKings is an open-source street racing gamemode that also runs a public server. Its README describes a mini-campaign of story missions, three save slots per player with per-vehicle XP and five vehicle classes from Starter to S, and it is inspired by Midnight Club LA and the Black Box era of Need for Speed. It has no standalone website, so its GitHub page serves as the project page, a good reminder that quality FiveM projects can look different from a polished roleplay site.

When a project is open source, check how recently its repository was updated, because that is your best sign of ongoing work.

How FiveM (GTA V) private servers work

A private server is software that re-implements the game's back end so the official or a patched client can connect to it. For FiveM (GTA V) the common building blocks are FXServer, txAdmin, QBCore, Qbox, ESX, ox_lib, oxmysql. Server owners run FXServer with scripts; Tebex is the common store integration. Frameworks like QBox appear in server tags.

How FiveM servers differ from GTA Online

GTA Online is designed around missions, heists and progression set by the developer. FiveM servers are built by their communities, so the rules, economy and content can be completely different. A roleplay server might have a full justice system, housing, phone apps and player-run businesses, none of which exist in GTA Online.

Many servers use frameworks such as ESX, QBCore or Qbox to manage jobs, inventories and money, then add their own scripts. Because each server is independent, rules on behaviour, combat and character creation vary widely and are enforced by the server's own staff.

Server types and roleplay rules

Serious roleplay servers often require a whitelist application, a working microphone and familiarity with roleplay rules. Common rules include no random deathmatch (RDM), no vehicle deathmatch (VDM), no metagaming using information your character would not know, no powergaming and a new life rule (NLR) after your character is downed. Casual or public servers let you join instantly with lighter rules.

Gang servers and gang-focused roleplay revolve around criminal organisations, territories and conflict with police and rival groups, usually with stricter rules about escalation. PvP and racing servers drop the roleplay and focus on combat or driving, often with custom game modes and leaderboards.

How to choose a FiveM server

Decide how serious you want your roleplay to be. Whitelisted servers often offer deeper stories but take time to join, while public servers are easier to start but can be chaotic. Check the population during your usual hours, the language spoken and the age requirements.

Read the rules and look at how staff handle reports and appeals. Check what the server's store sells; cosmetic items, priority queue and custom plates are common, while selling weapons, money or vehicles that give a gameplay edge can unbalance the economy. Look at the Discord for active, organised staff and clear documentation.

Getting started

Before joining a roleplay server, read its rules, join its Discord and watch how established players interact. Create a character with a believable name and backstory, check your microphone and learn the keybinds for the server's phone, inventory and emotes. New players often start with legal jobs such as delivery, taxi or mechanic work while learning the city's systems.

If the server is whitelisted, take the application seriously and answer in your own words. Once in, stay in character, avoid using outside information and report problems through official channels rather than in-game arguments. Patience pays off: relationships, reputation and businesses on roleplay servers take time to build.

Staying safe

Individual FiveM servers are community-run, unofficial and not operated or endorsed by Rockstar Games. Install FiveM only from its official website and join servers through the in-client browser or a direct connect address. You do not need to download extra executables to play; servers stream their content automatically.

Never run cheat menus or third-party tools, which can carry malware and lead to global bans. Use a unique password for your accounts and Discord, and never share login details or verification codes with anyone claiming to be staff.

Keep exploring

Still deciding? Compare FiveM (GTA V) servers by votes, rates and recent activity, read the glossary for any unfamiliar terms, and check a server's status before you download anything. If you run a server yourself, listing it is free.
