Best Multi Theft Auto Roleplay servers Private Servers

Roleplay is the largest part of the MTA:SA scene. These servers add characters, jobs, factions and rules on top of GTA San Andreas, running in languages from English to Turkish and Polish. What is a Multi Theft Auto private server?

Multi Theft Auto is a free multiplayer modification for the PC versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas, with GTA San Andreas being the main focus today. It is written in C++ with Lua scripting, so server owners can build complete gamemodes such as roleplay, DayZ-style survival, racing and freeroam. Private servers are the whole point of MTA: every public server is run by a community or an individual, listed on a master server and joined with the free client. The scene is large in Turkey, Brazil, Poland, Russia, Iran and Latin America. MTA is unrelated to the GTA V platforms (FiveM, RAGE:MP, alt:V) and was not part of the 2026 Take-Two shutdowns.

Multi Theft Auto versions explained

Almost every private server picks one version of the game and sticks to it, so the version decides which content, classes and mechanics you get. Use this table to match a version to the style you want, then filter the server list accordingly.

Multi Theft Auto versions at a glance
VersionPeriodWhat it isTypical servers
MTA:SA 1.62023-presentCurrent stable client and server line; servers are Lua resource-based and the client auto-downloads resources on connect. All current gamemodes; the master list also shows servers announcing 1.7 pre-release builds.
Gamemode-defined versionsvariesQuality differences are defined by the server's own gamemode version (for example DayZ 1.8 or a named RPG season) rather than by client versions.Check the gamemode changelog on the server's site.

Language communities and what they run

MTA has no single scene. Each community builds its own gamemode, forum and rules in its own language, and many players stay with one for years. The table groups the servers we verified by language and style, using what each site says about itself. Where a community runs its own forum, voice server or radio, as ProjectRPG and CodeMTA do, expect rules, guides and applications to live there rather than in the game.

Population versus slots

A big slot number does not mean a busy server. Need For Speed: San Andreas shows roughly 10 players out of 160 slots on its portal, and the master list can show servers with thousands of slots. The player counts we recorded on 15 October 2026 are one snapshot, not an average. Low numbers do not mean a server is dead: a quiet MTA server can still have an active forum, and a busy one can still have poor moderation, so look at both population and the quality of staff replies before you decide.

Beyond roleplay: racing, mix and survival projects

MTA's non-roleplay scene is older and often more community-driven than commercial. The sites we verified describe their own scale, which helps set expectations.

Because these projects run on gamemodes rather than rates, the differences between them are about content: tuning options, map pools, survival mechanics and event calendars. Read their changelogs, not just their homepages.

Signs a server is still maintained

Because MTA servers are independent, activity is the best guide. TOP-GTA published a DayZ 1.8 update dated 6 March 2026, and the Need For Speed: San Andreas forum announced a new car, a beta Vice City map and reworked challenges in August after a long delay. SAES:RPG staff acknowledged lower player counts and client instability in a July post. Dated posts like these are more useful than a polished homepage.

Several projects ship their own installer or launcher. Run only those from the project's own domain and scan them first, as our safety guide recommends. The glossary explains terms such as gamemode.

If a server is in our directory, its availability is also re-checked on the status page. Even so, the project's own site and Discord remain the source of truth for rules, wipes of progress, donation policy and staff changes, so read them before you spend time or money on any MTA community. A few minutes of reading usually reveals whether a project is thriving or only holding on, and it costs nothing.

How Multi Theft Auto private servers work

A private server is software that re-implements the game's back end so the official or a patched client can connect to it. For Multi Theft Auto the common building blocks are MTA:SA server (mtasa-blue), Lua resources. Default game port is 22003 (UDP) with 22005 HTTP and 22126 ASE; servers are listed on the master server at master.multitheftauto.com. Some servers ship their own launcher or installer.

How to choose a Multi Theft Auto server

Work through this checklist before you commit time or money to any server:

  1. Language the server rules and chat use
  2. Recent forum or Discord activity
  3. Live player count on the master list
  4. Whether voice chat is required
  5. Whether a custom launcher or big resource download is needed (some are 500MB)
  6. Whitelist or application process
  7. What donation perks include
  8. Whether staff publish rules and appeal procedures
  9. Time zone of peak population
  10. Hardware needs (low-end PC friendly servers state 'PC fraco' or small sizes)

Safety, scams and legality

  • Only download MTA from multitheftauto.com or the server's own site; avoid random mirrors.
  • Some projects offer their own .exe installer; check the domain and scan before running.
  • Never share your MTA serial or forum password; serial is tied to bans.
  • Donation shops are real-money; read what perks are promised and expect no refunds.
  • MTA is a fan modification of a Rockstar game; it is separate from FiveM and unaffected by the 2026 shutdowns of RAGE:MP and alt:V.

Getting started on a Multi Theft Auto server

  1. 1

    Pick a server

Start from the Multi Theft Auto server list or the most voted servers, and read the description, rates and rules.

  2. 2

    Check the server’s own website

Confirm it is online, shows recent news and states its version. Our status checks help, but the website is the source of truth.

  3. 3

    Install the client

Install a clean GTA San Andreas (the 1.0 US/EU version is commonly requested), install MTA:SA, then use the in-game browser or an mtasa://IP:PORT link. Resources download on connect.

  4. 4

    Check requirements

Default game port is 22003 (UDP) with 22005 HTTP and 22126 ASE; servers are listed on the master server at master.multitheftauto.com. Some servers ship their own launcher or installer.

  5. 5

    Join the community

Most servers run a Discord. Ask about wipes, staff and the donation policy before you spend anything.

Keep exploring

Still deciding? Compare Multi Theft Auto servers by votes, rates and recent activity, read the glossary for any unfamiliar terms, and check a server's status before you download anything. If you run a server yourself, listing it is free.
