What is a Ragnarok Online private server?
A Ragnarok Online private server is a community-run version of the classic 2D sprite and 3D world MMORPG, usually built on open-source emulators such as rAthena or Hercules. Server teams choose a ruleset, set rates and add their own features, quests and events.
Players return to Prontera, Geffen, Payon and Morroc to level, hunt cards, defeat MVPs and fight in War of Emperium. RO's private server scene is one of the oldest and most varied, with options ranging from faithful recreations to heavily customised servers.
Ragnarok Online is a 2D-sprite-in-3D-world MMORPG by Gravity, based on the manhwa by Lee Myung-jin and released in South Korea in August 2002. Official servers moved through episodic content updates and, around 2010, a large system overhaul called Renewal. Private servers exist because many players prefer the pre-Renewal mechanics, want different experience and drop rates, or lost access when official regional servers closed. Most run on open-source emulators such as rAthena or Hercules and are distinguished by rates, episode cutoff, custom content and War of Emperium schedules.

Ragnarok Online versions explained
Almost every private server picks one version of the game and sticks to it, so the version decides which content, classes and mechanics you get. Use this table to match a version to the style you want, then filter the server list accordingly.
| Version | Period | What it is | Typical servers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-Renewal (up to roughly Episode 13.2-13.3) | 2002-2009 era content | Original stat and damage formulas, 99/70 caps and transcendent second jobs; episode cutoffs such as 10.x, 13.2 (Encounter with the Unknown) and 13.3 (El Dicastes) are seen in this scene. | Low to high rates, classic WoE, MVP and card economy |
| Renewal | 2010 onward | Reworked mechanics, third jobs, instances; later episodes add 4th jobs and expanded classes (e.g. Episode 20-21). | Mid rate, 4th jobs, instance and event content |
| Revo-Classic / hybrids | private server design | Pre-Renewal base with selected Renewal systems, often starting at early episodes (e.g. Episode 8.0). | Low rate progressive |
Ragnarok Online rates and terms you will see
| Term | What it means | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Base/Job EXP rate | Multiplier on base and job experience; written as a pair or trio such as 75x/75x/25x (EXP/job/drop). | x3 to x8000 seen on servers verified today |
| Drop rate | Multiplier or percentage for monster item drops; cards are usually shown separately as a percentage. | x1 to 100% (very-high-rate servers) |
| Card drop rate | Chance for cards, often 0.01% for MVP cards on mid-rate servers. | 0.01% to 20% seen |
| Level caps | Max base/job level, e.g. 99/70 pre-renewal, 275/60 Renewal 4th jobs, 255/100 custom high rate. | 99/70 to 275 |
Ragnarok Online server types
| Type | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Low rate / classic | Players who want the original grind and economy | Slow leveling; small populations after launch hype fades |
| Mid rate (26x-150x) | Casual players with limited time who still want WoE | Custom drops and economy tuning vary |
| High / very-high rate | PvP, WoE and GvG focus with fast leveling | Pay-to-win donation items, very short progression |
| Renewal 4th-job | Returning players wanting modern classes | Large custom systems; check class balance and patch cadence |
| Hybrid / Revo-Classic | Progressive episode-by-episode play | Auto-combat inflates online counts |
Rates compared across verified servers
Ragnarok servers advertise rates as a base, job and drop triple, and the range is enormous. These rows come from the servers we verified on 15 October, grouped by pace, so you can see what the labels in the low and mid rate and high rate categories mean in practice.
| Pace | Server | Base / job EXP | Drops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Chrono RO | 3x | Not stated |
| Low | OldschoolRO - Revo | 3x | 1x items, equipment and cards |
| Low | UaRO | 5x | 5x, 7.5x on weekends |
| Low | CirrusRO | 5x | 5x, MVP drops 3x |
| Low to mid | PrimaryRO | 15x | 10x |
| Mid | WayRO | 20x | 10x normal cards at 0.1% |
| Mid | HymnRO | 25x | 10x, MVP cards 2x |
| Mid | ThanatosRO | 30x | 10x |
| Mid to high | MuhRO | 50x | 25x logarithmic |
| High | HoneyRO | 75x | 25x |
| High | Sakura-RO | 100x | 30x |
| Very high | Oldschool RO | 3000x | 100% general drops |
| Very high | ForsakenRO | 6000x | 100% drops |
| Very high | DarkRO: Bloodshed | 8000x | 100% drops |
Card drop rates matter more than the headline
Cards drive the Ragnarok economy, and servers set them separately from the drop multiplier. Two servers with the same multiplier can feel very different if card chances differ. The numbers below are the stated values on each site.
| Server | Normal and mini-boss cards | MVP cards |
|---|---|---|
| MuhRO | 0.20% | 0.04% |
| ThanatosRO | 0.25% | 0.01% |
| Sakura-RO | 0.50% | 0.01% |
| WayRO | 0.1% on 10x normal cards | MVP drop 1x |
| Maharlika RO | Normal cards at 0.1x | Not implemented |
| Oldschool RO | 20% normal cards | 5% MVP and mini-boss cards |
Episodes and regions in the scene
| Episode or era | Servers |
|---|---|
| Episode 8.0 progressive (Revo-Classic) | OldschoolRO - Revo |
| Episode 10 (Republic of Schwarzwald) | Maharlika RO |
| Episode 13.2 | PrimaryRO, WayRO, Oasis RO, CirrusRO, Oldschool RO |
| Episode 13.3 (El Dicastes) | UaRO, HoneyRO, Sakura-RO |
| Episode 17.2 (third jobs) | Chrono RO |
| Episode 20 | Sovereign RO (plus a pre-renewal Classic server) |
| Episode 21 (fourth jobs) | MuhRO, HymnRO |
Region and language shape the scene too. CirrusRO and Maharlika RO target Southeast Asia, ThanatosRO is a Brazilian server, MuhRO and WayRO list European hosts, and Oasis RO runs in Arabic and English with WoE on Saturdays from 9 to 10 pm Saudi time starting 17 October. Pick a server whose War of Emperium hours fit your timezone, since castle fights decide guild standing.
For ruleset detail, jump to the pre-renewal and renewal categories.
Reading online counters
Counters can mislead. UaRO shows 1,077 players beside 1,947 merchants, HoneyRO displays autotrade counters, and OldschoolRO - Revo has auto-combat systems that can raise its 2,214 online figure. Treat population as a rough guide and look at Discord activity, dated patch notes and WoE results instead.
| Server | Counter or community | Dated evidence |
|---|---|---|
| UaRO | 1,077 players, 33,343 Discord members | Patch notes 15 September |
| Sovereign RO | 2,427 players, 30,326 Discord members | News 14 and 15 October |
| MuhRO | 148 players, 12,127 Discord members | Patch notes 248 on 1 October |
| HymnRO | Small active Discord, 281 members | Patch notes 14 October |
| Oasis RO | 10 players, 62 Discord members | News 14 October |

How Ragnarok Online private servers work
A private server is software that re-implements the game's back end so the official or a patched client can connect to it. For Ragnarok Online the common building blocks are rAthena, Hercules. Most servers rely on Gepard Shield or similar anti-cheat; Windows client; some offer browser or Android access.
How private servers differ from the official game
Official Ragnarok Online moved to the renewal ruleset and added many classes and systems. Private servers let players choose: many still run pre-renewal mechanics, while others use renewal with selected content. Rates are often raised, and many servers add quality-of-life features like autoloot, warpers, healers and storage access.
Monetisation varies. Most servers fund hosting through a donation shop, typically selling costumes, headgear and convenience. Some sell items that affect power, so understanding the shop is an important part of choosing a server.
Rulesets, classes and rates
Pre-renewal is the classic ruleset, with a base level cap of 99 and the Novice, first-class, second-class and transcendent job paths. Characters start as Novices, then become Swordman, Mage, Archer, Acolyte, Merchant or Thief, and later Knight, Crusader, Wizard, Sage, Hunter, Bard or Dancer, Priest, Monk, Blacksmith, Alchemist, Assassin or Rogue. Renewal changes stat and damage formulas, raises the level cap and adds third classes such as Rune Knight and Arch Bishop, and newer servers may include fourth classes.
Rates are commonly grouped as low rate (around x1 to x10), mid rate (around x25 to x100) and high rate (x255 and above). Low rates keep cards and gear valuable and parties important, mid rates speed things up while preserving the economy, and high rates focus on War of Emperium, PvP and custom content. Episode matters too, since it decides which maps, dungeons and items exist.
How to choose a Ragnarok server
Decide between pre-renewal and renewal, then pick a rate that matches how much time you can give. Check the population during your usual hours, how active War of Emperium is and whether guilds are balanced.
Read the donation shop. Costumes and cosmetic headgear are common and fair; selling cards, MVP items or stat-boosting gear can make the server pay-to-win. Look for an active staff team, a published changelog, clear rules about bots and dual clients and a history of stable operation rather than frequent wipes.
Getting started
Create your character, complete the Novice training or the server's custom starter quests and choose your first job class. Many servers provide starter gear, warpers and healers in the main towns, which make the early levels much faster. Plan your stat build in advance using the server's guides or a calculator, since stat resets may be limited.
Join a party or guild early. Parties share experience and make dungeons such as Glast Heim or Orc Dungeon safer, and guilds organise MVP hunts and War of Emperium. Save zeny for upgrades and important cards rather than temporary gear, and use the server's Discord to keep up with events and patch notes.
Staying safe
Ragnarok Online private servers are unofficial and not affiliated with or endorsed by Gravity. Download clients, patchers and full installers only from the server's official website and scan them before running.
Use a unique password for each server and never share your account or storage password. Be cautious of offers for free zeny, cards or leveling, and avoid third-party bots, which are a common source of malware.
