What is a RuneScape private server?

A RuneScape private server, usually called an RSPS, is a fan-run game built on reverse-engineered RuneScape server code. Each one targets a specific client revision, recreates Gielinor's skills, quests and bosses, and then layers its own rules, rates and custom content on top.

Some servers aim to feel close to Old School RuneScape with faster experience. Others are built around player killing, instant gear or custom bosses and items. Because the scene is so varied, two RSPS can feel like completely different games.

RuneScape is a fantasy MMORPG developed and published by Jagex, first released on 4 January 2001. The company now runs two live versions: RuneScape 3 (2013) and Old School RuneScape, which launched in February 2013 from an August 2007 build. A RuneScape private server (RSPS) is a fan-run game using independent server software and a client of a chosen revision. They exist because players want faster progression, older eras the official game no longer offers, PvP-focused or custom content, and communities that the official game does not provide. They are unofficial and not affiliated with Jagex.

RuneScape versions explained

Almost every private server picks one version of the game and sticks to it, so the version decides which content, classes and mechanics you get. Use this table to match a version to the style you want, then filter the server list accordingly.

Activity snapshot of checked servers

The size of a community matters more than its marketing. On October 15, 2026 we recorded Discord and site signals for the servers on our RuneScape list. They are snapshots, not averages, and some sites expose no counts at all.

Numbers also shift with the time of day and with seasons. Luna and Amascut run seasonal content, which can pull players in at the start of a season and thin out later, so a count taken mid-season understates the launch rush. Check the Discord on the evening you plan to play rather than relying on one reading.

Content styles with concrete examples

Most listed servers label themselves OSRS-based, but they use the label differently. The servers below show the range from near-copy to a game of its own.

What each style offers
ServerWhat the site states
ImpactChambers of Xeric, Theatre of Blood and Tombs of Amascut, plus 45+ bosses; start fresh or maxed
Zythera23 skills, four raids and 50+ bosses, with recent OSRS encounters such as Yama and the Fortis Colosseum
LunaPermanent economy world beside seasonal League worlds; ironman and bronzeman modes
AmascutDated patch notes, battle pass, skill tree and echo bosses
AugustCustom Olympian raids, custom talent tree and US, EU and OCE worlds
VarkathLong-running economy with ironman and hardcore ironman play

If you want official-style content with faster progress, Impact and Zythera fit. If you want something new, August describes itself as a game of its own. See PvM and raids for the boss-focused group.

Update cadence: reading dates

A dated post is the quickest evidence that someone is still working. Amascut posted a Fall Season update on October 1, with patch notes on September 17 and 8. Varkath showed a game update on September 22, Luna had dated items up to September 19, and Slayora publishes a roadmap running to December. Darkan's news feed is slow, with its newest post seen on September 9, 2024, yet its Discord was active.

  • Dated news beats a polished front page.
  • Roadmaps show intent but not delivery.
  • Discord activity can cover for a slow website, as with Darkan.

Game modes and rates by server

Examples of rate and mode settings
ServerStated modes or rates
AshmarchXP x5, x3 for Lucky, x1 for Unreal and Ultra Ironman; +5 to +8 percent drop bonus for lower-XP modes
DarkanWorld 1 follows 2012; World 2 runs 25x XP; no in-game purchases
ImpactStart fresh or maxed account mode
LunaIronman and bronzeman modes; seasonal Leagues-style world

Read the mode page before creating a character, because progress usually does not move between modes. The rates guide and wipes explainer help with the vocabulary.

Platforms and clients

Download options vary widely, and they matter if you play on more than one machine. The details below are what each site listed.

Client options listed by checked servers
ServerWhat the site lists
ZytheraWindows, Mac and Linux clients
EmberHoldWindows installer, macOS DMG, Linux AppImage, jar, Android APK, iOS in browser
AugustWindows installer and universal jar
AshmarchBrowser client and Java launcher
LunaPC, iPhone, iPad and Android

Installers are signed or unsigned depending on the project, and the facts we collected note that Windows may warn about unsigned launchers. Run them only if the server's own site supplied them, and keep your operating system updated. Jar launchers commonly need Java installed. For phones, see the mobile clients listed above, and for general steps read how to join a private server. Always download the client from the server's own website.

How RuneScape private servers work

A private server is software that re-implements the game's back end so the official or a patched client can connect to it. For RuneScape the common building blocks are Void (open-source, 2011 RuneScape, Kotlin), Darkan (open-source 2012 remake). Java 11 or newer is commonly required for jar launchers. Use a download only from the server's own site.

How RSPS differ from the official game

Official RuneScape and Old School RuneScape are balanced around long-term grinding and a membership subscription. Private servers usually raise skilling and combat experience rates, so reaching 99 in a skill can take hours rather than weeks. Many add teleport menus, home banks, starter kits and daily tasks to cut downtime.

Most RSPS are free to play and supported by donations. In return, donors often receive ranks with perks such as extra drop rate, donator zones or cosmetic items. How far those perks go is one of the most important things to understand before you start.

Revisions and server types

Revisions describe which version of the client a server uses. Older revisions such as 317 have a long history in the scene and are often heavily customised. Revisions around the 600s and 700s are based on RuneScape 2 and early RuneScape 3 era content, with features such as the Grand Exchange and later combat changes. OSRS-based servers use modern Old School clients and recreate content such as raids and newer bosses with familiar interfaces.

Economy servers emphasise skilling, trading and drops, with items that hold value. Spawn servers let you spawn gear and supplies instantly so you can focus on PvP. PK servers are built around the Wilderness, bounty systems and quick kits. Many servers also offer ironman, hardcore ironman or ultimate ironman modes, and some add custom game modes with modified experience rates.

How to choose an RSPS

Decide first whether you want economy, PK or spawn play, then look at the experience rates for combat and skilling. Check whether the server has existed for a while and whether it has had frequent resets, since many RSPS relaunch under new names. A server with a stable history and a published update log is a safer time investment.

Read the donation store closely. Cosmetics, convenience ranks and minor boosts are common; selling best-in-slot gear or large drop rate multipliers can make the economy unbalanced. Check how active the staff are, whether bots and macros are dealt with, and whether the team publishes clear rules about real-world trading.

Getting started on an RSPS

Most servers greet new players with a starter kit, a home area with banks and shops and a teleport interface to skilling and combat locations. Before spending your starting coins, read the server's guides on the fastest early money makers, since custom drop tables and shops often differ from the original game.

Decide early whether you want to play as a normal account or an ironman variant, because switching later is usually limited. Join the server's Discord for update announcements, event schedules and drop parties, and check whether in-game commands such as ::vote, ::store or ::help work, since they often unlock rewards and support.

Staying safe

RuneScape private servers are unofficial and not affiliated with or endorsed by Jagex. Most RSPS use a downloadable client or launcher, so download it only from the server's official website and scan it before running. Be very cautious with jar or exe files shared in Discord DMs.

Never reuse your official RuneScape or Jagex account password on a private server. Use a unique password, enable any two-factor or bank pin options the server offers, and never share your login with anyone promising free items or ranks.

Keep exploring

Still deciding? Compare RuneScape servers by votes, rates and recent activity, read the glossary for any unfamiliar terms, and check a server's status before you download anything. If you run a server yourself, listing it is free.
