What is a WoW private server?

A World of Warcraft private server is an independently run realm that uses open-source emulators such as MaNGOS, CMaNGOS, TrinityCore or AzerothCore to recreate the game's server software. Players connect with a client for a specific patch, point it at the server's realmlist and play without a subscription.

Most private servers recreate a single expansion at its final patch, keeping the talent trees, raids and class design of that era. Others go further with custom content, instant level-up realms or entirely new progression systems.

World of Warcraft is a subscription MMORPG that launched in November 2004 and has been expanded many times since. Private servers exist because Blizzard's official game only offers the current expansion plus a limited set of Classic-era realms, so fans run emulated realms to replay older patches, change rates, or add custom content. Scenes range from near-faithful recreations of Vanilla, TBC and Wrath to heavily modified fun and solo realms. All are unauthorised by Blizzard, which has pursued legal action against some large projects.

World of Warcraft versions explained

Almost every private server picks one version of the game and sticks to it, so the version decides which content, classes and mechanics you get. Use this table to match a version to the style you want, then filter the server list accordingly.

Activity snapshot of checked realms

Server pages rarely say how busy they are, so we recorded what each site and Discord showed on October 15, 2026. The numbers are snapshots of Discord presence or site widgets, not averages, but they separate communities of thousands from launches with a handful of players. Use them next to the WotLK and TBC lists.

Rates in practice

Stated rates differ more than the headline experience number suggests. Some realms also change reputation, gold, honor or drops, and some let each player choose. These are the settings the realms themselves publish.

Published settings on checked realms
RealmExperienceOther stated rates
BloodWoW TBCx10None stated on the homepage
Lordaeron (Epic Progressive)x5Raid resets twice a week
TheraWoWx7, weekend x10, optional x1Group-scaled dungeons and raids
OnlyFunsWoWx5, selectable up to x25Reputation x5, gold x4, epic drops x4
WoW Patagoniax1 to x4, chosen per playerHonor x2, arena x2, professions x2, reputation x1
UWoWLegion x100 and x5; new MoP realm x10Separate realms per expansion

The practical lesson is to compare more than one column. A x5 realm with x4 gold and epic drops can progress faster than a x10 realm with unchanged drops. Our guide to server rates explains the vocabulary.

Where realms are hosted and spoken

Language and location shape the community. UWoW is Russian-language, with many realms under one account. UltimoWoW targets players in Spain and Latin America, while WoW Patagonia is hosted in Argentina for lower latency in Latin America and offers a Spanish 3.3.5a client download. Lordaeron is EU-based, and OnlyFunsWoW is hosted in Australia. See Spanish-language realms for that group.

  • Pick a nearby host if you want good ping in PvP.
  • Check the client language: some realms require a localized client download.
  • Expect different peak hours from the community's timezone.

Launchers, patches and launch-week risks

Many realms ask for more than a realmlist change. WOTLK5 needs a custom patch and addon, TheraWoW supplies a custom launcher, OutlawCraft uses a launcher that patches your client and UWoW uses a custom client with an updater. UltimoWoW offers an official launcher for client setup. Use only the file on the realm's own website.

How World of Warcraft private servers work

A private server is software that re-implements the game's back end so the official or a patched client can connect to it. For World of Warcraft the common building blocks are AzerothCore, TrinityCore, CMaNGOS, vMaNGOS. AzerothCore describes itself as an open-source, modular MMO solution built on MaNGOS, TrinityCore and SunwellCore under GPLv2. Many custom realms add modules such as playerbots.

How private servers differ from retail and Classic

Retail WoW always runs the newest expansion, and official Classic realms follow Blizzard's own release schedule. Private servers let you pick an expansion and stay there. A WotLK realm will remain at patch 3.3.5a rather than moving on, so the endgame stays focused on Icecrown Citadel and Ruby Sanctum instead of a rotating season.

Rates are the other big difference. 'Blizzlike' realms keep experience at x1 to recreate the original pace, while x3, x5 or x10 realms speed up leveling for players who want to reach raids sooner. Emulated scripts are never perfect, so expect occasional bugs in boss mechanics, quests or pathing, especially on less mature cores.

Expansions and patches

Vanilla servers run patch 1.12.1 with 40-player raids such as Molten Core, Blackwing Lair and Naxxramas, slow leveling and the old honor system. The Burning Crusade servers use 2.4.3, with arenas, Outland, flying mounts and raids up to Sunwell Plateau. Wrath of the Lich King on 3.3.5a is the most widely emulated version, adding the Death Knight, Northrend and achievements.

Cataclysm servers usually run 4.3.4 with the reworked old world, transmogrification and Dragon Soul. Mists of Pandaria on 5.4.8 adds the Monk, pet battles and challenge modes, and Legion on 7.3.5 brings artifact weapons, class halls, Mythic+ and the Demon Hunter. Later expansions are harder to emulate well, so script quality varies more on those realms.

Beyond Blizzlike realms you will find PvP-focused servers, fun realms with instant max level and custom vendors, and high-level custom servers that raise the cap to 255 with their own items and zones.

How to choose a WoW server

Check population at your preferred time and on your faction, because a heavily one-sided realm makes world PvP and battlegrounds frustrating. Look at the core and how long the project has been running, since mature projects tend to have better scripted raids and fewer crashes.

Read the donation store. Cosmetic mounts, transmog and convenience items are common; selling raid gear or level boosts on a Blizzlike realm undermines progression. Ask whether the realm plans fresh launches or seasonal resets, how the team handles cheaters and botters, and whether there is a public bug tracker. Active staff who fix reported issues are worth more than a long feature list.

Getting started

Create your account on the server's website, download or prepare the matching client and read the realm rules before logging in. On a fresh launch, leveling zones can be crowded for the first few days, so consider an off-meta starting area or group questing. Join a guild early: raids, attunements and dungeon groups are much easier to organise with a regular roster, and many realms rely on guild activity rather than automated group finders.

Staying safe

WoW private servers are unofficial and are not affiliated with or endorsed by Blizzard Entertainment. Use a clean client for the correct patch and only download files, patches or launchers linked from the server's official website. Be cautious with custom launchers and scan them before running.

Never use your Battle.net email and password on a private server. Create a separate, unique password, and do not share your account with anyone offering gold, boosts or gear. Keep your private server client in its own folder so it never touches a retail installation.

Keep exploring

Still deciding? Compare World of Warcraft servers by votes, rates and recent activity, read the glossary for any unfamiliar terms, and check a server's status before you download anything. If you run a server yourself, listing it is free.
