Is Ultima Online Free? Endless Journey vs Freeshards

Ultima Online has an official free tier with real limits and hundreds of free community shards. Here is how they differ and what each one costs you.

PrivateServers.com Editorial Published October 15, 2026 7 min read

Short answer

There are two ways to play Ultima Online without paying: the official free tier called Endless Journey, and community-run freeshards. They are very different. Endless Journey is on the official servers and has hard limits on housing, banking and accounts. Freeshards are unofficial servers that cost nothing to join and usually change the rules, the map or the era.

Neither is freeware in the sense of downloadable standalone software, because both need a client. Below is what each option actually gives you, with a comparison, a setup checklist and the points to check on any shard listed under Ultima Online private servers.

Official free play: Endless Journey

Wikipedia says Endless Journey replaced the traditional free 14-day trial in 2018 and allows free play indefinitely with significant restrictions. The official uo.com page spells out the terms. New accounts and previously paid accounts that have been closed for at least 120 days are eligible, and the accounts are free to access.

A short history of free play

Free options did not arrive all at once. The dates below come from the sources used in this article, and they show that community shards were established well before the official game offered an indefinite free tier.

When free ways to play appeared
DateEventSource
2008Official subscriptions around 100,000, down from a 2003 peak of about 250,000Wikipedia

The pattern fits the wiki's explanation that hobbyists built free servers as official subscriber numbers fell. It also means shards vary widely in age, from long-running communities to newer projects, so the date a shard opened is a useful first filter.

Free community shards

The UO Codex wiki defines a freeshard as a server run by someone other than Electronic Arts, usually on a server emulator, which players join for free using the standard client plus a third-party tool. It says there are now hundreds to choose from. The shards differ on era, ruleset and donations.

Official free tier or freeshard?

Which one fits you

Endless Journey

  • Official servers with the official client
  • Free, but no house ownership and a 20 item bank box
  • Skill cap of 720, same stat rules as veterans
  • One account per IP on a shard

Freeshards

  • Unofficial, community-run, free to join
  • Wide choice of eras and rules, from T2A to custom worlds
  • Rules and caps vary by shard
  • Quality depends on the staff and the community

If you want to see the official game with its full population before committing, Endless Journey is a safe place to look. If you want a specific era, a PvE-only world or a language community, a freeshard is the practical route, and our era-accurate shards page and custom PvM shards page narrow the field.

Many players try both: Endless Journey to see the official population and systems, then a freeshard for a specific ruleset. Characters do not move between them, so treat each as a separate history and use separate passwords. If you are unsure, play the free official tier for a week, note which features you miss, such as owning a house, and then look for a shard that provides them.

What free really costs

Free does not mean no commitment. Endless Journey costs nothing, but the missing house ownership shapes how you play, because uo.com says those accounts cannot own a house and cannot safely log out in housing, which pushes you toward inns, taverns and a small bank box. A freeshard costs nothing to join, but you take on a different risk: the shard depends on volunteers and donations, and its rules can change.

Getting set up and staying safe

  1. 1

    Decide official or unofficial

Endless Journey uses uo.com. A freeshard uses its own site and launcher.

  2. 2

Get the client the shard asks for

ClassicUO says it does not distribute copyrighted game assets and that you need to legally obtain a copy of the Ultima Online Classic Client. UOAlive offers an All In One package that bundles ClassicUO, a launcher and Razor Enhanced.

  3. 3

Read the rules and donation page

Make sure donations are cosmetic before spending anything.

  4. 4

    Use a unique password

Never reuse your uo.com or email password on a shard.

For more on risks see the private server safety guide, and for registration steps see how to join a private server. Terms such as freeshard, T2A and ServUO are defined in the glossary, and the private versus official servers post covers the broader trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ultima Online free to play?

Partly. Official Endless Journey accounts are free to access, with limits such as no house ownership, a 20 item bank box and one account per IP per shard. Wikipedia describes the full official game as a subscription game; we could not verify current prices, so check uo.com. Community freeshards are free to join.

Who can use an Endless Journey account?

According to uo.com, new accounts and previously paid subscription accounts that have been closed for at least 120 days are eligible. Check the current page, since terms from earlier years have changed.

Do I need to buy the game for a freeshard?

Often you need a client. ClassicUO states it does not distribute game assets and that you must legally obtain a copy of the Classic Client. Some shards ship packages that bundle a launcher, so read each shard's connection page.

Are freeshards pay to win?

It depends on the shard. Outlands and UO Forever both state that donations unlock only cosmetic or aesthetic items, and UOAlive says it has no pay-to-win items. Always read the donation page of the shard you consider.

Can I use ClassicUO on official servers?

No. The ClassicUO README says using a custom client to connect to official UO servers is strictly forbidden. Use the official client there, and use ClassicUO or a shard's launcher only on shards that support it.
