What is a Ultima Online private server?

Ultima Online is a sandbox MMORPG released in September 1997 by Origin Systems and published by Electronic Arts, with development later passing to Mythic Entertainment and then Broadsword. Its player-driven economy, skill-based advancement, housing and open PvP made it a landmark of the genre. Private servers, known as freeshards, exist because fans reverse-engineered server emulators and wanted specific eras (such as the Second Age or Renaissance), custom content, role-play focus or free play. Freeshards typically use the official client together with a helper such as ClassicUO and Razor, and range from faithful era recreations to heavily customised worlds.

Ultima Online versions explained

Almost every private server picks one version of the game and sticks to it, so the version decides which content, classes and mechanics you get. Use this table to match a version to the style you want, then filter the server list accordingly.

Ultima Online versions at a glance
VersionPeriodWhat it isTypical servers
Second Age (T2A)1998-2000Pre-Trammel era with a single ruleset, classic housing and no item insurance.Era-accurate PvP (UO Second Age)
Renaissance (UOR)2000-2001Adds Trammel and Felucca split; many 'old-school' shards stay Felucca-only.Classic PvP, no Trammel (UO Forever style)
Age of Shadows to Mondain's Legacy2003-2005Introduces properties, Samurai Empire (Bushido, Ninjitsu) and Mondain's Legacy (Spellweaving).ServUO shards such as Ultimate World
Stygian Abyss onward2009-presentLater expansions with newer content and mechanics.Modern-era PvE (UOAlive)
Custom / sandboxongoingShards that build new maps, classes or systems on emulators like ModernUO or RunUO.UO Outlands, UO Evolution, Britannia Eternal

Ultima Online server types

Ultima Online server types at a glance
TypeBest forWatch out for
Era-accuratePlayers who want T2A or Renaissance rules.Smaller populations and harsh PvP.
Custom PvMPlayers who enjoy crafting, quests and bosses.Heavily custom economies; read the wiki.
Full-loot PvP sandboxCompetitive players.Risk of item loss.
PvE-onlyPlayers who dislike open-world PvP.Little player conflict.

Caps and account limits compared

Skill caps, stat caps and account limits are the numbers that shape a build, and they differ sharply between shards. The figures below come from each shard's own pages as listed on our Ultima Online private servers page, so confirm them in game before planning a character.

Stated caps and limits on selected shards
ShardSkill and stat capsAccount rules
UO OutlandsSkill cap 700 (720 with Skill Mastery); stat cap 225Three accounts per IP, five characters per account, one house per account
Legends of SosariaNo skill cap; starting stat cap 300, up to 500 with scrollsOne account per player
Britannia EternalNewbie boost starts five skills at 90No paywall stated
Banes World UOCaps documented on its wikiPages marked as still being built

A shard with no skill cap rewards players who want one character that does everything, while a hard cap forces specialisation and makes template choices matter. Legends of Sosaria describes itself as aimed at solo or small-group players building without caps, and Outlands aims at a constantly developed custom world instead of a single OSI era.

Event rhythm and community size

Two shards with similar rules can feel very different depending on how often something happens. At our last check, Discord presence and homepage counters gave a rough picture of how busy each community was.

Population signals and event programmes
ShardSignal at last checkEvent rhythm
UO OutlandsAbout 9,200 Discord members, roughly 2,770 onlineRegular patch notes (latest 12 October), seasonal events, a yearly King's Faire
UO EvolutionAbout 2,770 Discord members, roughly 245 onlineTriple champion spawns at noon and 7 pm, two town invasions, monthly grand auction on the third Sunday
Forgotten World181 players shown online on the homepageNear-daily tournament posts, including one-on-one PvP in provided gear
Legend of TerraOver 300 Discord members, 22 onlineDaily events, a PvM ranking and a PvP league
Britannia Eternal47 Discord members, about 12 onlineRapid iteration rather than scheduled events

Discord presence is only a proxy for population, and it can over- or understate real activity. Pair it with dated news, which our status page helps you verify, and with the shard's own wiki.

Emulators and what they mean for you

Most freeshards run on an open-source emulator, and the name tells you something about age and style. RunUO is the long-standing base, ServUO and ModernUO are newer, and Sphere is an older alternative. The table pairs examples from our listings with what the core implies.

Emulator cores named by listed shards
EmulatorShard that names itWhat to expect
RunUOUO Evolution credits the RunUO core; UOItalia Reborn's newer serverMature codebase with a large custom-script history
SphereUOItalia Reborn's older serverOlder server line, kept alongside the newer one
ServUOUltimate World (Turkish) runs ServUO up to Mondain's Legacy and Samurai EmpireEra content through the mid-2000s
ModernUOBritannia EternalNewer core used by young custom projects

The emulator rarely matters to a player directly, but it affects how fast a shard patches and how stable it is. A shard that publishes patch notes, such as Outlands or UO Strange Earth, is easier to judge than one that does not.

Language communities and pitfalls

Shards in other languages tend to be rule-heavy and community-led. Forgotten World is bilingual Russian and English, UOItalia Reborn is Italian with factions and rankings, Orgolia is a French role-play shard organised like a lore library, and Legend of Terra serves Spanish speakers. Our non-English shards page lists them together.

  • Check the newest dated post. UOItalia Reborn's homepage showed April posts, while Forgotten World showed early October ones.
  • Expect missing pages. Orgolia marks several lore pages as coming soon, and Banes World marks wiki pages as still being built.
  • Look for mandatory maintenance tasks. Forgotten World posted a mandatory re-registration of player homes.
  • Count the community, not the member total. UOItalia Reborn showed over 400 Discord members but about 18 online.

How Ultima Online private servers work

A private server is software that re-implements the game's back end so the official or a patched client can connect to it. For Ultima Online the common building blocks are RunUO, ServUO, ModernUO, Sphere, POL. Connection is usually by IP and port (commonly 2593), for example play.uooutlands.com:2593.

How to choose a Ultima Online server

Work through this checklist before you commit time or money to any server:

  1. Which era or ruleset (T2A, UOR, AoS, SE, ML, SA+, custom)?
  2. Is Trammel present?
  3. Which emulator and client are required?
  4. Skill and stat caps?
  5. PvP vs PvE rules, and item insurance?
  6. Does the donation shop sell gameplay advantages?
  7. Recent patch notes?
  8. Active Discord with moderators?
  9. Language of the community?
  10. Housing availability?

Safety, scams and legality

  • Use only the shard's official launcher; allow exceptions in antivirus only for software you trust.
  • Do not share your account password with staff or players.
  • Check donation items: cosmetic-only versus gameplay advantages.
  • Freeshards are unofficial and unaffiliated with EA or Broadsword.
  • Be careful about pay-for-power claims.

Getting started on a Ultima Online server

  1. 1

    Pick a server

Start from the Ultima Online server list or the most voted servers, and read the description, rates and rules.

  2. 2

    Check the server’s own website

Confirm it is online, shows recent news and states its version. Our status checks help, but the website is the source of truth.

  3. 3

    Install the client

Use the shard's own launcher or the official client with ClassicUO and Razor; custom shards like Outlands require their launcher and bundle ClassicUO and Razor.

  4. 4

    Check requirements

Connection is usually by IP and port (commonly 2593), for example play.uooutlands.com:2593.

  5. 5

    Join the community

Most servers run a Discord. Ask about wipes, staff and the donation policy before you spend anything.

Keep exploring

Still deciding? Compare Ultima Online servers by votes, rates and recent activity, read the glossary for any unfamiliar terms, and check a server's status before you download anything. If you run a server yourself, listing it is free.
