What Travian Legends is

Travian: Legends is the name of the current official edition of the browser strategy game from Travian Games. You start with one village, grow wood, clay, iron and crop production, train troops and join an alliance, and a round ends when someone completes the Wonder of the World. It is the game that independent servers copy, change or speed up, so understanding it makes the choices on our Travian private servers page easier.

This guide covers the round structure, tribes, version history and monetisation of the official game, then shows how private servers differ. It is based on Wikipedia and on the pages of the servers themselves, because Travian's own help pages were not available to us when we checked.

“The first player to build their World Wonder to level 100 is declared to be the winner of the round.”
— Wikipedia: Travian

How a round works

Wikipedia describes normal rounds as running for months: Wonder of the World plans are released into Natar villages after about 200 days, and coalitions then race to build and defend a Wonder. Natars are the non-playable tribe that holds the central area, and they attack Wonder villages every five levels until level 95 and after each new level beyond that. Artefacts, reintroduced in update 3.5, give bonuses to whoever holds them.

Rounds are short on private servers by design. A high-speed server compresses the same sequence into days or hours, which is why speed multipliers matter more than any other setting. Our speed servers page groups them and the glossary defines the terms.

Tribes in Travian Legends

Tribes and where they came from
TribeAdded withNotes from the sources
RomansOriginal gamePowerful but expensive troops
GaulsOriginal gameFast troops and merchants
TeutonsOriginal gameCheap, weak troops and high-capacity merchants
Huns and EgyptiansFire and Sand expansionLater available on all international servers
SpartansGlory of Sparta expansionAdded later still

Natars and Nature are the non-playable tribes: Natars control the centre and Wonder villages, and Nature animals sit in oases. Fan guides disagree about which tribe is best for beginners, and some of the beginner pages that appear in search results describe Travian: Kingdoms, a separate game with its own support site, so do not assume their numbers apply to Legends.

How the rules changed over time

Travian version milestones
DateReleaseWhat changed
Sept 2004Original gameReleased; Wikipedia's infobox gives 5 September
12 March 2005Version 2Second version
30 June 2006Version 3Adds annexable oases and heroes, per Wikipedia
Feb 2009Update 3.5Reintroduced artefacts
22 Oct 2009Update 3.6Made several Plus-only features available to free users
Feb 2011Version 4Announced July 2010 and released February 2011

Most private servers pick one of these rule sets and keep it. Our pages for T3.6 classic servers and T4.x servers separate them, which is useful because the version decides whether you get heroes, oases mechanics and extra tribes.

Gold, Plus and why private servers exist

Wikipedia says Travian was financed early on by players upgrading accounts with Travian Plus and by web banners, and that Gold later replaced Plus on most servers. It adds that Gold allowed players to directly influence the game mechanics, for example by increasing production or finishing builds immediately. That history is the main reason players look for alternatives: free gold, different speeds and no payment pressure.

How private servers handle speed and gold, from their own pages
ServerRules stated on its site
GoTravSpeedT3.6 and T4.6 worlds under one account; new T4 worlds open every Saturday at 08:00 GMT; start gold ranges from 50 on the x50 T4 worlds to 5,000 on the Pvp and Slow worlds
SS-TraviMEGA x1,000,000, VIP x200 and PRO x1,024 (both labelled T4.4), Elite x50,000 and a x8 Tournament server advertising a 60,000 gold prize
TravianZ (open-source project)Targets Travian T3.6 with configurable features; version 11 adds Huns, Egyptians, Spartans and Vikings and a T4-style hero system

Reading a server page like a Legends player

Because the official game is slow and detailed, the quickest way to judge a private server is to compare its page against what you know of the original. Each line below maps an official concept to a setting you can check before registering.

What to check on a server page
Official conceptSetting to look forWhy it matters
Round length and Wonder timingSpeed multiplier and when Natars or plans appearTells you whether the round lasts months, days or hours

Heroes and adventuresT3.6 versus T4 labelT3.6 has no hero adventures; T4 and later add them

Troop speedSeparate troop-speed multiplierSome worlds list it apart from world speed
  1. 1

    Pick the version first

Decide between the T3.6 style and a T4-style world. The version limits which mechanics, such as heroes, exist.

  2. 2

Choose a speed that fits your week

Slow worlds suit diplomacy and long planning. Very high speeds finish quickly and favour players who can log in many times a day.

  3. 3

    Read the gold policy

If gold is free or granted at registration, note how much and whether it can speed builds or training.

  4. 4

    Check activity

Look for recent news, a changelog with dates and a live player count. A server with no dated updates may have stalled.

None of this replaces reading the rules page. Our glossary covers terms such as rounds, wipes and revisions, and the server wipes post explains why a finished round simply starts again.

Official versus private: what to expect

Choosing a path

Official Legends

  • Rounds run for months, with Wonder plans around day 200
  • Gold is a premium currency that affects game mechanics
  • One publisher, one rule set per round

Private servers

  • Rounds can finish in days on speed worlds
  • Gold often given at start, such as 50 to 5,000 on GoTravSpeed worlds
  • Rule set varies: T3.6, T4.x, or hybrids

Some private servers deliberately track official changes. GoTravSpeed's changelog records a fix about wounded troops in the hospital, quoted below, which shows how a server can follow Legends mechanics without being the same game.

“Wounded troops no longer consume crop while in the hospital, matching Travian: Legends”
— GoTravSpeed changelog

To compare how the experience changes with speed, read our post on server rates, and when you are ready to pick one see how to choose a private server and private versus official servers. Server availability is checked on the status page.

Frequently asked questions

What is Travian Legends?

It is the current official edition of Travian, a browser strategy game where you build villages, train troops and join alliances. A round ends when a player or alliance completes the Wonder of the World at level 100. Private servers copy or modify its rules.

How long does a Travian round last?

Wikipedia says that in normal rounds Wonder of the World plans appear after about 200 days, so a full round takes months. Private speed servers compress this into days or hours using multipliers such as x1,000 or more.

Which tribes are in Travian Legends?

Classic servers have Romans, Gauls and Teutons. Later expansions added Huns, Egyptians and Spartans, and Vikings appeared temporarily with Northern Legends. Natars and Nature are non-playable. Private servers may include some or all of these.

Is Travian Kingdoms the same as Legends?

No. Travian Kingdoms is a separate game with its own support site, so advice written for Kingdoms, such as its tribe or protection details, should not be assumed to apply to Legends or to private servers.

Are Travian private servers official?

No. They are run by independent teams, some with open-source clones like TravianZ, and they are not endorsed by Travian Games. Check each server's rules, gold policy and track record before you invest time.
